Kativasthy is a popular Ayurvedic treatment in which heat is applied to a specified
portion of the lower back by specially prepared warm medicated oils and retained there within a herbal
paste boundary for a prescribed time.
This treatment is most effective for low back-related
complaints, especially disc bulges and degenerative disc diseases. Also, best for numbness in the legs
due to nerve compression. Strengthens back muscles, removes rigidity and spasm, and thus maintains
normal curvature of the spine.
The person is allowed to lie on his/her stomach on a massage table The dough ring is
about four to five inches in diameter and is placed on the back around the painful area. Usually, it is
applied to the lumbar-sacral area of the spine, which is a major site of Vata.
The warm ghee is
poured or swabbed onto the lower back in the dough ring. When the oil cools down, it is squeezed out
with cotton gauze and the procedure is repeated a few times.
